1999

Catharine Lumby starts work on designing the UG degree; office in RC Mills

2000

Media & Communications UG degree introduced

2001

Anne Dunn joins; MECO computer lab created; Brennan Building 215 refurbished for MECO; Richard Broinowski becomes adjunct professor in Media Studies

2002

First technical officer appointed, employed by school reporting to Chair of MECO (Adrian Langker)

2003

Kate Crawford joins MECO; first internship officer appointed; staff offices move to basement level of RC Mills

2004

Chris Chesher joins (to direct Arts Informatics degree, not yet part of MECO); Marc Brennan and Richard Stanton join MECO; honours degree introduced; Master of Media Practice introduced; Overseas Fellowship Program established; tech officers supporting MECO assigned from META Centre in the faculty; first equipment booking software installed, procured from UTS – ermplanet

2005

Steven Maras, Megan Le Masurier and Fiona Giles join MECO; TV Studio created in the Education Building; Education Building 209, 210, 211, 212 – MOU with Education – refurbished

2006

Gerard Goggin joins MECO; MECO becomes a department; third tech officer position created to cater for television studio (Daragh Lane); Arts Hub for Online Media – AHOME – built in the Transient Building, rooms 170 and 171 created in the Transient Building from the former META Centre labs; Master of Strategic Public Relations introduced; Master of Digital Communication and Culture introduced (not yet part of MECO); Robin Moffat joins MECO as internship coordinator (until May 2014)

2007

Catharine Lumby leaves for UNSW, Gerard and Kate Crawford join her; Alana Mann and Sean Chaidaroon join MECO; Master of Publishing introduced

2008

Fiona Martin, Penny O’Donnell, Antonio Castillo and Tim Dwyer join MECO; Radio Room acquired, Holme C104 negotiated with University of Sydney Union

2009

MECO staff move to Level 1 and Level 2 Holme Footbridge Terrace refurbished offices (first time all staff together – previously in Mills and Woolley Buildings); Steven Maras chair; Sean Chaidaroon leaves; Stephanie Donald joins as professor of Chinese Media Studies, then honorary professor of Media Studies; PG internship coordinator position created (Fran Hagon); Master of Health Communication introduced

2010

Joyce Nip joins as an inter-school appointment; Faculty Arts Digital disbanded, MECO to provide own tech support; Alison Ray joins MECO; Radio Room refurbished, Holme C104 security upgrade; Peter Fray from The Sydney Morning Herald appointed as First Decade Fellow December 2010 to April 2011

2011

Goggin re-appointed to MECO as inaugural professor; Olaf Werder joins MECO, Marc Brennan chair; Digital Media Unit created, facilities spread across the University, including loans store in Brennan MacCallum. Digital media manager appointed and digital technology officers audio, video (Phil Glen)

2012

Death of Anne Dunn; Gerard Goggin chair; Marc Brennan and Antonio Castillo leave

2013

Merge between MECO and DC; Benedetta Brevini, Grant Bollmer and Jonathon Hutchinson join MECO

2014

MECO staff joined by Digital Cultures (from Level 3 Woolley) and Digital Media Unit on refurbished Level 2 Woolley; Bunty Avieson joins; Adriana Hernandez starts as an UG internship officer; Richard Broinowski and Richard Stanton leave MECO; Fiona Giles chair (until 2015); Media Lab Brennan LS120 created, Media Lab merges with eLearning spaces

2015

Mitchell Hobbs joins MECO

Tim Dwyer chair

2017

Alana Mann chair; Margaret Van Heekeren, Marcus Carter and Justine Humphry join MECO; Grant Bollmer leaves

2018

Tim Dwyer chair; Francesco Bailo, Diana Chester, Heather Horst, Lea Redfern  and Jolynna Sinanan join MECO; podcasting studio built in Education Building (replacing space in Holme Building)

2019

Alana Mann chair; Olga Boichak and Mark Johnson join MECO; VR lab built in the Education Building

2021

Terry Flew joins; Catharine Lumby returns – chair

2022

Alana Mann leaves for the University of Tasmania; new staff: Agata Mrva-Montoya, Catherine Page Jeffery, Joanne Gray, John Hartley, Xiang Reng, Margie Borschke; Gerard Goggin returns; MECO becomes a discipline (August)
