Note to the 2014 Edition

Peter White

A noctuary is a record of what passes during the night, the opposite of diary, a daytime record. Night Skies of Aboriginal Australia, which includes material from the Torres Strait Islands, is not only this but, as its author anthropologist Diane Johnson says, an appreciation of Aboriginal stories and ideas. Since its publication in 1998, Oceania Monograph 47 has been in continuing demand, and this reprint will allow it to have a wider circulation. Apart from minor corrections, the original text and illustrations are unchanged. Readers who wish to explore the subject further should search the subject on the internet, since there have been a number of more recent specific studies by several authors. x
