Map of the five small volcanic islands known as the Moluccas. On the centre far left side of the figure box lie Ternate, Tidore, Mare, Moti and Makian in ascending order. They are located west of Halmahera which consists of many islands sprawled out in a deformed and angled K-shape. Southwards of the volcanic islands is Bacan, which is comparatively larger than the Moluccas. Most of the surface area of the depicted islands is shaded grey to indicate land above 300 metres.

20Figure 1: The Moluccas were originally the five small clove producing islands of Ternate, Tidore, Moti, Makian and Bacan.
